Am I the Only One?

Considering the wedding special in Slate this week, I'm left wondering if I'm the only engaged woman in the entire world who really wants a small, simple, casual wedding, the only one who doesn't consider it to be a week-long festival of Princess Me, the only one who didn't demand a higher bribe in the form of a gigantor diamond, the only one who doesn't want, as this article claims "all couples" want, "the extravaganza to end all extravaganzas."

I'm battling with friends and family over this, and in the end Todd and I will end up with some kind of compromise, fancier and more expensive than we want, but, I hope, smaller and less elaborate than, say, my mother and sister want. I'm afraid my $40 dress, which looks beautiful on me and needs only minor alterations that my friend Kat, an amazing seamstress, could do, is probably not going to be allowed. To please my mom, I'm going dress shopping again next month, "just to see what's out there," and I know there will be something that she loves and demands to pay for so I can't argue about the expense, and if I still don't want it she'll cry, and then I'll buy it.

Just from my experience so far, I've got to say, it's ridiculous to think a wedding is the bride's day. I'm certainly not going to go all monsterous and start commanding people around if it means that come wedding day my mom is weeping because I'm wearing a dress that isn't nice enough for her or because I chose a venue that she thinks is shabby. Todd and I are going to do whatever everyone else wants because they all care more about this one single party than either of us. And then after gorging on cake and guzzling champagne they can all go home and we can get on with the real business at hand, which is having a completely wonderful marriage for the rest of our lives. The only person who's mentioned that part so far is my father, apparently the only one not gone completely mad with wedding fever. I wish everyone else would remember what this party is actually for.
