Apathy Among Fiancees-to-Be
Maybe not apathy, maybe pre-disillusionment? Anyway, I spent a good two hours the other day sitting at a coffee shop with my friend Chris (a female Chris) discussing all things related to engagement, marriage, and boys in general. She and I both happen to be in the same situation of being with the person we imagine that we'll want to stick with til one of us keels over, and yet neither of us actually being engaged. This pre-engagement, or unengagement, is a little strange and a little annoying. I fail to comprehend it every day. As my friend Charlie said (I paraphrase), "Being engaged is deciding to get married, so if you decide to get engaged, aren't you basically engaged?" Yes, I say, except no. Don't ask me how.
But to get back to the point. Chris and I were discussing weddings and planning them, and how crazy some people get, and how poorly others do at it. She was saying that she wants her best friend topless with a parasol at her wedding, to get back at her for some godawful bridesmaid dress she was forced to wear at said friend's wedding. I can't think of anything similarly horrible that I want to do (I just want it to be cheap, casual, not annoying, and cheap), but clearly my name-twin Claire Zulkey can.
