Calamity Concluded
OK, I have to admit, once It Finally Happened, the story got pretty interesting. Pessl can put together a good twisty plot. But when I finished (and that Final Test was really irritating) I was left with the feeling that it was just too far to go, too small a pot of gold at the end of an extremely long rainbow. She could do with a much better, firmer, cleaner editor. Clearly, the author has talent, but she needs to be reined in from all of her whims. If she'd taken fewer detours (you know, if she could leave a sentence alone to just be practical, not to be three kinds of clever) then her next novel might be worth a shot. If it's twice as long as it needs to be, though, like this one was, I don't think it's a trip I'd like to take.
