The Real Reason

The real reason I'm not posting much lately is that life has gotten exceedingly boring. To the point where I spend most of my time in complete silence because I've got nothing to say. It's pretty damn pathetic, but there you are. I'm sure things will pick up again eventually.

In other news, rent Tristram Shandy and see if you like it. Because I don't know if I did or didn't. I love Steve Coogan and Michael Winterbottom and surreal postmodern mindbenders, but I don't know if I particularly liked this film. I didn't hate it. I just don't know if I cared at all. Which is sad because I was really looking forward to it.

The News that Really Matters

I have made no secret of how addicted I am to Slate. Just this week, I noticed something more to love about it. In the right hand column of their articles, they feature links to the major headlines in several news sources: Newsweek, the Washington Post, and who do you think is right at the top? The Onion.

The Worst Pun Ever

So my mom started chemo this week. The good news is, the doctors determined that she's only got to have six doses total, each three weeks apart. So there's plenty of time to recuperate and by the beginning of next year this part will be over. The bad news is, it has prompted her to create the worst pun ever. You see: At work (she's a first grade teacher), she has colleagues who, being incredibly kind and generous women, pop into her class and read a book or teach one lesson so she can sit down for a minute, go to the bathroom, you know, all those things that teachers never have the time to do but people who are going through chemo need to do a lot. She has dubbed these women... wait for it... chemo-sabes. Yeah. Awful. I told her so and she told me it was clever. Ugh.

Anyway, the chemo isn't bad yet. The two main side effects are that it makes you tired and nauseous. They gave her some pills for the nausea, the main side of which is: fatigue. So she basically has just slept for three days. Between my dad and me, we're making sure she eats and drinks and has some kind of company when she's awake. She's got an amazingly positive attitude. The only part that really gets her down is that she has to lose her hair. They picked out a wig last week and she's getting her head shaved next week, before it all falls out, which would be pretty traumatic. But as I keep pointing out, the hair will grow back. There's nothing you can do except look for the good in it. You think about the bad and you can't get out of bed.
